Czeslaw Milosz

When we were fleeing the burning city
And looked back from the first field path,
I said: "Let the grass grow over our footprints,
Let the harsh prophets fall silent in the fire,
Let the dead explain to the dead what happened.
We are fated to beget a new and violent tribe
Free from the evil and the happiness that drowsed there.
Let us go" - and the earth was opened for us by a sword of the flames.

  2. Forget
    Czeslaw Milosz

    Forget the suffering
    You caused others.
    Forget the suffering
    Others caused you.
    The waters run and run,
    Springs sparkle and are done,
You walk the earth you are forgetting.

Sometimes you hear a distant refrain.
What does it mean, you ask, who is singing?
    A childlike sun grows warm.
    A grandson and a great-grandson are born.
You are led by the hand once again.

The names of the rivers remain with you.
    How endless those rivers seem!
    Your fields lie fallow,
The city towers are not as they were.
You stand at the threshold mute.

  3. O lugar em que temos razão
    Yehuda Amichai

Do lugar em que temos razão
    jamais crescerão
    flores na primavera.
O lugar em que temos razão
    está pisoteado e duro
    como um pátio.
    Mas dúvidas e amores
    escavam o mundo
como uma toupeira, como a lavradura.
E um sussurro será ouvido no lugar
    onde houve uma casa
    que foi destruída.
